An interpretative piece by musician and Egyptologist Egyptologist Heidi Köpp-Junk, This piece was played next to a large scale drawing of an ancient Egyptian Stela, a stone slab, located in the British Museum. The text refers to Twins Suty & Hor and features a musical hymn which has brought to life by this commission.

WALT - Whistling and language translation. Interdisciplinary project

“This project was a proposal to translate spoken Zaptoec into it’s whistle form. It’s a one to one translation”.

Zapotec, originating in Oaxaca, Mexico, is a tonal language, the meaning of the words partly contained within the intonation of speech. It was developed and utilised as a strategy of resistance against Spanish colonizers the indigenous population disguised their conversations as music. Because meaning can be communicated through tones alone, the words can be emulated by whistling. The works in WaLT include a vinyl record edition of a translation of Zapotec into whistling, as well as the tools made for its background research
